Darnel’s Cakes' Goal
Darnel’s Cakes is a project that raises awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic and financially supports local and national organizations that are at the forefront of fighting the virus, disease, and/or associated stigmas.
Our first fundraiser went extremely well and we're proud to support COLOURS in Philadelphia! It went so well, that we've transitioned into providing quality baked goods for the Lansdale Farmers' Market int he Philadelphia Suburbs.
Find us in the Hillcrest Shopping Center in Lansdale, PA every Saturday this Summer and early Fall!
Who is Darnel?
Darnel Lamer Ray Scott, 21, was one of my first cousins who unfortunately passed away on January 13, 2013 due to AIDS complications. Darnel was born and raised in Athens, GA and is survived by his mother, Lalita Scott, sister Jaleesa Scott and extended family and friends across the US.
By the age of 5, he took a liking to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and made it his church home. Singing and an appreciation for music provided Darnel with joy and comfort. He joined the choir and at the age of 19, he became the Director of the Youth Choir. At the age of 20, he also went on to become the church’s assistant director of their summer camp.
Like many other young people his age he enjoyed time with friends, school (on a good day) and family whenever possible. He was loved by many and is certainly missed. His passing was a huge loss because he died at a young age and his spirit was undeniably uplifting.
Why this project is necessary?
Many of the people affected by his passing have done their part to build upon his legacy and work toward an end to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Darnel’s Cakes is an idea that shares the same goal.
Organizations we've supported
AIDS Athens is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that exists to enhance and enrich the quality of life for those living with HIV/AIDS, as well as their friends, families and partners. The organization also seeks to effect a fundamental change in society's attitude toward persons infected with HIV/AIDS. The prevention of the disease is the most important way to eliminate the virus all together, which is why prevention serves a primary component throughout our organization. AIDS Athens serves the 23-county North and Northeast Georgia area. This service area includes: Walton, Barrow, Greene, Clarke, Jackson, Morgan, Oconee, Madison, Elbert, Oglethorpe, Banks, Dawson, Forsyth, Franklin, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, and White counties. When you support AIDS Athens, you are supporting a large portion of Georgia as well.
